One of the Pork Pie Appreciation Society's past champion pie makers, Andrew Jones Ltd of Huddersfield, won our Reader Award. Their big break came in 1989 when the media was tickled by this West Yorkshire butcher lifting a national award for best Cornish pasty. That week their pasty orders shot up from three dozen to 2,000 and kept rising.

Andrew says his first job was at Harry Ramsden's. "But my pal there told me, 'don't be a chef - the hours are terrible'. It was the worst advice I've ever taken, since most of my mornings now start at 3.30. It's the price you pay for being an artisan producer."

"The best pork pies are found in Huddersfield, and that's official. Butcher Andrew Jones of Marsh, Huddersfield was crowned champion pork pie producer for the third time on Saturday (09/03/02). Mr Jones came out top from 51 entrants to the 10th annual pork pie competition at the Old Bridge Inn, Ripponden
